My new iPod brought a new world attached
11 September 2007 in Links & Personal Experience
I’ve never been the kind of guy that buys anything just because of its popularity. Being in a need for a new music player, I’ve decided to try an Apple player. I really don’t have a need for display, as so, I bought a new iPod Shuffle orange.
After some use, I have so much good to say about it, as bad. Resuming: I like a lot of the design, and the usability of the device. The bad part, iTunes lock-in (disgusting) and some of its particularities (the only way to see the battery status, its through a green light that corresponds to 30%-100%?).
All in all, I can live with it.
The thing that most surprise me, was Podcasting. I’ve been avoiding this for a long time, mainly because the only usable way, was to listen in the computer (which sometimes doesn’t worth the time).
With the iPod + iTunes solution, podcasting subscription is a very simple process. I can now enjoy great podcasts like .Net Rocks! and Livro dos Porquês (Portuguese) wherever I am.
Needless to say, this isn’t something only for iPod owners. But if you own a iPod, you will get the process so much easier.

Well not really, the podcasting process is almost as easy when using my Zen V Plus except for the fact that I don’t have the iTunes Music Store to find the feeds.
Creative offers an aplication called ZenCast that works much like itunes podcast function, it even has a browser sort of like the store even if it doesn’t have much content.
Or I can just use my winamp library to do the same… Podcasts are easy to use, there’s a toon of options to listen to them even if the iTunes+iPod combo is probably the best one in terms of integration.

you can always use Anapod (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ not sure if this takes html, so)…it’s a substitute for itunes, and it’s…well, not itunes, so :)…not sure how it handles podcasts, because i’m not really into such kinky things, but it works more than well enough with my ipod shuffle GREEN.
also, it’s green, not pissy orange…manly green. green. yeah.

I think there was a python app called “ipod shuffle database builder” that would let you use the shuffle (at least the old model) without the need for itunes: You simply copy MP3 files onto it. And run the Database Builder program after you added or removed files. That simple.

Let me know if it works with your version.
