Stack Overflow Launches
16 September 2008 in Linux & Programming & Software | Comments (0)

What a cool new website.

Stack Overflow has been upgraded to public beta. Right now, I would say its going to be a cool resource for programmers.

I been hearing about this project for months mainly from Jeff and Joel (from the team) and this is my first look at it, and I must say it is very well built. I still have my doubts on some features like the badges, but I like a lot some others like the points system where you have more power of editing when you contribute more (Once the system learns to trust you, you’ll be able to edit anything, much like Wikipedia).

The description from the site:

Stack Overflow is a programming Q & A site that’s free. Free to ask questions, free to answer questions, free to read, free to index, built with plain old HTML, no fake rot13 text on the home page, no scammy google-cloaking tactics, no salespeople, no JavaScript windows dropping down in front of the answer asking for $12.95 to go away. You can register if you want to collect karma and win valuable flair that will appear next to your name, but otherwise, it’s just free. And fast. Very, very fast.

Take a look…

.NET Framework source code to be released
3 October 2007 in Microsoft & Software | Comments (0)

I still can’t believe in this news. Apparently Microsoft will be releasing the base class libraries under the Microsoft Reference License, and the source code will be available for download by anyone.

We’ll begin by offering the source code (with source file comments included) for the .NET Base Class Libraries (System, System.IO, System.Collections, System.Configuration, System.Threading, System.Net, System.Security, System.Runtime, System.Text, etc), ASP.NET (System.Web), Windows Forms (System.Windows.Forms), ADO.NET (System.Data), XML (System.Xml), and WPF (System.Windows).  We’ll then be adding more libraries in the months ahead (including WCF, Workflow, and LINQ).  The source code will be released under the Microsoft Reference License (MS-RL)

This will allow even greater integrated debugging support. VS 2008 will even support to automatically retrieve the appropriate .NET Framework source files on demand from Microsoft.

You can get more information on Scott Guthrie blog and this Hanselminutes podcast.

With this move, I’m sure the .NET framework can begin to appeal those who believe the framework its to close to work with. I can’t wait to peek under the hood of WPF and LINQ code.

Even so, I still hope Microsoft can offer in the near future a real open-source framework with third party patches…

Python 3000 Alpha 1 Avaiable!
2 September 2007 in Programming & Software | Comments (0)

Python 3, or as the community likes to call it “Python 3000”, its a long-time topic for discussion and development. After so many discussion, we can finally get some real experience with the first alpha release of Python 3000 now available for download.

Although the final version its only schedule for middle 2008, this current release can be a great place to see some of the low changes made to the language.

Because of so many changes, the code its not compatible with 2.x releases, and if you want to enjoy the new releases, you can start porting your code.

Content-Aware Image Sizing - WOW
23 August 2007 in Programming & Software | Comments (1)

I was just sent to this movie on YouTube, and I must say I was really impressed.

Basicly its a application to resize images in a way that the content is preserved intelligently, thus keeping its key elements on a resolution independent basis.

You just need to see for yourself:

Apparently this software was created by Dr. Ariel Shamir and presented at this year’s SIGGRAPH.

The Code Project Browser Add-in for VS 2005
16 August 2007 in Programming & Software | Comments (0)

The great people from SlickEdit have created this add-in to let you integrate the very very large collection of samples directly from Code Project just inside your VS.

You can just download the installer, but the sources is also available, as usual in CP.

You will need a registered account on Code Project, so you can logging inside the IDE and allow the add-in to establish its own session with the portal.

Besides a new toolbar with some features, including direct project download and favorites list, it simplifies the process of downloading, saving and opening the samples.
